3x3s: 2022 (5/4/2022)

So I thought it would be cool to maybe make a 3x3 again, but this time with some of my favorite stuff in 2022. This post was started in March, but I super procrastinated on it so I'm only finishing it now.

Albums:
PREP-PREP
Pet Sounds - the Beach Boys
Currents - Tame Impala
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
no-vacancy - lost spaces
Dawn FM - The Weeknd
The Search For Everything - John mayer
Atlanta Millionaires Club - Faye Webster
Sob Rock - John Mayer

In recent times, The Search For Everything has taken over Battle Studies for my go-to John Mayer simp album. I really like it being more of a connected breakup album, and also I just listened to Battle Studies a bit too much. Hobo Johnson has been somewhat tainted for me with his new, really shitty albums, and I also just haven't listened to grae enough for it to be on here. Faye Webster has become close to one of my favorite albums, and Atlanta Millionaires Club is just a pure masterpiece. Finally, Dawn FM was actually released this year, but it's quickly become one of my favorite albums ever. All the songs are bangers, and the way the songs are order just works really well for some reason. I also just love the narration and overall concept of the album. It's just a great vibe.

Manga:
Attack on Titan
Fullmetal Alchemist
Onanie master kurosawa
Dorohedoro
Genshiken
Naruto
Banana Fish
Forget Me Not
My Girl

This was pretty hard to do. This year, I replaced Domestic Girlfriend, Three Days of Happiness, and One Punch Man with Forget Me Not, My Girl, and Banana Fish. I tried to still have my 3x3 represent all the genres that I like, so if you look closely the new additions are actually pretty close in genre to the titles that were replaced. There's the romance, then the one with intense emotions, and then the action type.
The standout title that I read this year might have to be Banana Fish. It's just such a perfect series. It's almost unbelievable how it was written by some Japanese person in the 1990s, because it just captures that Western feeling so well. It really just has everything. There are fight scenes, a huge mystery to be solved (which is handled very, very well in my opinion), great characters, great mindgames, touching emotional moments, it just has everything. The only complaint I have is pretty much that it feels that the author has to force it to be shoujo sometimes, meaning that at some parts it feels like the characters are just gay for no reason. I get that it's a huge reason why some people might like it so much, but to me it felt forced and unnecessary.
The other two series are still 10/10s in their own right, however. Forget Me Not is an amazing story about this guy and all his past loves. I love the stories where characters just go through their past (ex. Kite Runner), and this one just works so beautifully.
My Girl is probably one of the most underrated manga I've ever read. It's about this 20 something year old that one day finds out he has a 5 year old daughter, and that the mother of his child is dead. He has to take care of this child, and what makes it great is that it just feels so realistic. The dude is a great guy, but he is young and he can realistically only do his best sometimes. The dynamic between him and his daughter is so cute, yet there is that touch of grief that is just always there because the mother is missing. I love that dynamic so much. It's basically just Yotsuba, but slightly grittier, and frankly better. My only gripe with this series is that I wished that it was waaaay longer. I needed so much more content from this series.

Movies/Books/whatever - no change
I haven't really been watching movies or reading too many books, so I haven't really seen anything mindblowing (Everything Everywhere All at Once might be close though!)
