Raqiya Review (11/2/2022)

This manga was confusing because I don't know shit about religion, however I feel like it would be confusing to even religious people because its about Gnosticsm, which isn't that popular a religion nowadays anyways (if it's even still around). There were explanations that I did appreciate, including explanations about some girl named Luns that's some kind of religious figure?

The story is basically about how this girl Luna who is causing a war between Catholics and Gnostics, who are also a part of the Nitobe group. I have to be honest, I am writing this review months later, and this story was not good enough to be memorable in the first place. I'm really just going off notes I had written before.

This story is very Japanese, by which I mean that there some interesting views of the west. For example, there are some slightly racist depictions of black people. Also, for some reason Ursula De Guin (the author of the Earthsea books, which by the way I haven't met a single other person in real life who's ever read those) is the president of the United States, and then some author named Greg Bear is also part of the Free Masons, which exists for some reason.

This series is very very mid. The story, while having a cool ish concept at first, ultimately ends up being a confusing, forgettable mess, and Boichi's art is cool but I can't help but feel like he might've contributed to some of the mediocrity of the series' story.

The part that I enjoyed most about this manga was the explanations that they give about Gnosticism, even though I did have to take those with a grain of salt because this is coming from a Japanese manga. These explanations actually gave me more of a context on another series, Eden: It's an Endless World!, which I enjoyed more than the manga itself.

Don't read this manga, unless you absolutely have nothing better to do.
